'Gulf of America' to start appearing on Google Maps instead of 'Gulf of Mexico'
Earlier this month, the U.S. Coast Guard started referring to the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America."
Google announced that it would be referring to the "Gulf of Mexico" as "Gulf of America" after Trump signed an executive order changing the name.
The search engine behemoth says the change follows its practice of changing names of places when they have been updated by official government sources.
"For geographic features in the U.S., this is when Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated," the outlet wrote on the social media platform, X. "When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America."
The Gulf of Mexico is a body of water to the south of the United States and is loosely bound by the western shore of Florida, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the coastline in between both, and the island of Cuba.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Coast Guard started referring to the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America."
It will likely take the Department of the Interior time to change the name formally.
