Hundreds of people buried in Papua New Guinea landslide: report

Over 300 people and more than a thousand homes were buried in a giant landslide that covered a village in Papua New Guinea, according to a Saturday local report.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that more than six villages have been impacted by the landslide in the Mulitaka region, according to Reuters.
"Australia’s High Commission in Port Moresby is in close contact with PNG authorities for further assessments on the extent of the damage and casualties," a DFAT spokesperson stated.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said that so far four bodies have been retrieved from the area, and that more deaths are expected.
Helicopters have been sent out to search for people because the landslide has blocked roads.
Prime Minister James Marape said disaster officials are currently helping with the recovery efforts.
