Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna on Thursday night said she spoke with House Speaker Mike Johnson about making changes to her proxy voting legislation, which the pair appeared to agree on.

Luna has helped lead a bill that would allow new moms in Congress to designate someone to cast their votes for them if they cannot attend the session in person for parental reasons. The legislation has met strong opposition from Republicans, who warn that it is unconstitutional and could open the door for lawmakers to use the method for other reasons.

The Floridian on Thursday said she and the speaker talked after President Donald Trump said he liked the idea of new mothers voting by proxy. However, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he would let the decision rest with Johnson.

“[Johnson] has called me after POTUS statement and we discussed limiting the vote to just new moms who cannot physically travel in event of emergency,” Luna said in the post. “This is smart.”

The developments come after Luna helped force a full floor vote on the issue earlier this week, which brought business on the House floor to a halt. Luna and eight other Republicans sided with all Democrats to vote on the resolution.

It is not clear when the new vote on the legislation will take place, but the House is in recess until Monday.
