GOP House panel calls Democrat mayors to Hill over 'sanctuary city' policies, amid Trump deportation
Trump's administration has said it will withhold funding from cities if they do not cooperate with deportations.
Democratic mayors of so-called "sanctuary cities" are set to testify Wednesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, as President Donald Trump makes the mass deportation of illegal migrants a top priority.
The mayors are Mike Johnston, of Denver; Eric Adams, of New York City; Michelle Wu, of Boston, and Brandon Johnson of Chicago.
Some states and municipalities have been officially or unofficially deemed "sanctuary cities" because, in part, their law enforcement agencies will not help federal agents deport the migrants.
Adams – whose city has struggled financially and otherwise under the influx of illegal migrants and who has recently shown a willingness to improve the situation – said he hoped there will be a "civil conversation" at the hearing, according to the Associated Press.
Trump's administration has said it would withhold funding from sanctuary cities if they do not cooperate with deportations.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has already sued the Chicago and the state of New York, alleging that they obstructed the federal government from enforcing immigration laws.
