The Senate on Friday afternoon failed to advance two continuing resolutions that seek to reopen the federal government, prolonging the shutdown through at least Monday.

The government officially shut down on Wednesday after Democrats blocked the Republicans' stopgap funding bill. The Senate tried to pass the bill again later Wednesday but failed. The Senate didn't vote on Thursday, as the upper chamber took a break for Yom Kippur.

Friday's vote failed in a 54-44 split, with Democratic Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voting with most Republicans, along with Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine. Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul voted against advancing the resolution.

Sens. Chris Coon of Delaware, a Democrat, and Jerry Moran of Kansas, a Republican, did not vote.
