Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., said Tuesday that he supports President Donald Trump's statement on giving defensive weapons to Ukraine.

"I think Russia is going to have to be shown that it will not pay to prolong the war,” said Harris. President Trump’s willingness to sell air defense equipment to Ukraine “really is a reaction to the step-up by Mr. Putin on air attacks on Ukraine, and the president made it clear that he was disappointed that President Putin increased those air attacks," Harris said on the "John Solomon Reports" podcast.

Trump said Monday that the U.S. would send more weapons and assistance to Ukraine to help in its war with Russia.

Russia launched more than 100 drones at Ukraine overnight, and fired over 1,200 drones, 39 missiles and almost 1,000 powerful glide bombs at its neighbor in the past week.

Trump admitted that he would "have to" send more help to Ukraine so it can defend itself as Russia ups its attacks.

Harris said that he doesn't support U.S. troops being involved in the war, but that the response from Trump is appropriate.

"I think the right response is to say, 'Well, if you're going to increase the air attacks, we're going to increase the air defenses, and we're going to level this playing field,'" he said.
