Michigan GOP Rep. John James has announced that he's running for governor.

"We are going to Make Michigan Great Again!" he wrote on the social media platform X on Monday.

James won his congressional seat in 2022 for Michigan's 10th congressional district. He also ran twice unsuccessfully for  Senate.

"Our state has suffered long enough," James wrote in a statement. "Michigan is strong. Our people are strong. But we are being held back by a lack of strong, competent leadership."

Michigan is a swing state with President Donald Trump narrowly winning it in 2016 and 2024 and losing it in 2020.

Michigan is also a state with term limits, meaning Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer cannot run again.

The GOP gubernatorial primary is expected to be crowded. Right now, James' top opponent is state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt.

Former GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon and former state Attorney General Mike Cox may also run, according to NBC News.
