Grassley accuses Biden administration of ignoring thousands of reports related to migrant children
The reports include 56,591 notifications of concern, 7,346 reports of human trafficking and 1,688 fraud leads, according to the senator's office. The Trump administration has processed approximately 28% of the reports so far.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley on Thursday accused the Biden administration of ignoring thousands of reports related to illegal migrant children, including reports of potential human trafficking and fraud.
The senator released an internal report from the Department of Health and Human Services, which revealed the new Trump administration is working to process a backlog of 65,605 reports concerning migrant children.
The reports include 56,591 notifications of concern, 7,346 reports of human trafficking and 1,688 fraud leads, according to the senator's office. The Trump administration has processed approximately 28% of the reports so far.
“My oversight exposed the Biden-Harris administration for placing unaccompanied migrant children with dangerous sponsors and actively obstructing law enforcement and Congress’ efforts to rescue vulnerable kids," Grassley said in a statement. "I applaud the Trump administration for its swift action to protect unaccompanied migrant children by addressing the concerning reports the Biden-Harris administration shelved."
The Trump administration's activities so far have resulted in hundreds of investigative leads, 36 investigations that have been accepted by U.S. Attorneys, seven indictments, and three convictions. The report also noted that 11 arrests have been made, and 25 arrest warrants have been issued so far.
Grassley has spent over a decade working to protect migrant children at the border, including introducing a bill in January that sought to protect migrant children from human trafficking by authorizing unaccompanied minors at the border, who are under 14, to be fingerprinted.
The bill would also mandate that the Department of Homeland Security give reports about apprehended traffickers who pretend to be related to minors.
