House extends recess until next week amid shutdown
The House district work period will stretch from Tuesday, Oct. 7 through the following Monday, Oct. 13.
House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday designated next week as a "district work period," meaning that lawmakers will stay out of Washington, D.C., as the Senate looks to pass the House's continuing resolution that would reopen the government.
The Senate on Friday failed to end debate on the House Republican-led continuing resolution and no votes are scheduled over the weekend, meaning the government shutdown will last at least until Monday.
The House district work period will stretch from Tuesday, Oct. 7 through the following Monday, Oct. 13.
“The House will come back into session and do its work as soon as [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer allows us to reopen the government,” Johnson said in a Friday press conference before the Senate vote, per The Hill.
The next Senate vote is not expected to take place until Monday.
