House GOP campaign arm tells lawmakers to tout reconciliation bill, Dems predict it'll cost majority
The messaging comes as lawmakers in both chambers of Congress return home for the long Memorial Day weekend. The House will return next week, but the Senate is not expected back until June.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), which operates as the campaign arm of the House, urged GOP lawmakers on Thursday to emphasize the success of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act ahead of next year's midterms.
The massive legislative package passed the lower chamber on Thursday morning in a narrow 215-214 split, but still needs to pass the Senate next month, before it can go to President Donald Trump's desk.
The committee sent a memo to lawmakers, encouraging them to emphasize the achievements of the legislation on things like Medicaid, tax cuts and border security. It also gave them three bullet points: “Go on offense,” “Keep the message simple,” and “Tie Democrats to tax hikes, handouts for illegal immigrants, and protecting fraud," per The Hill.
“The One Big, Beautiful Bill is more than a messaging opportunity; it’s a midterm roadmap,” the memo said. “This bill prevents tax increases to put more money in every American’s pocket ... It is protecting Medicaid by removing illegal immigrants and eliminating fraud, [and] investing billions of dollars to build the wall and secure the border.”
The House Democrats' campaign arm, however, warned the massive legislation could cause House Republicans to lose their majority, claiming it could raise costs for the average American.
“In a desperate, hypocritical attempt to inoculate themselves from their eventual vote in favor of this terrible bill, vulnerable Republicans whined, wrote letters, and filed meaningless resolutions to try and convince their voters they would not cut Medicaid and other vital programs. It was all a lie,” the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee wrote in a two-page memo.
“In poll after poll, public support for Trump and the Republican agenda is cratering," it said. "The GOP Tax Scam doubles down on all the anxieties the public has about D.C. politicians prioritizing their wealthy friends over everyday people — and takes a chainsaw to programs that are popular among a broad swath of Americans, from Trump voters to independents to progressives."
