House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and California GOP Rep. Tom McClintock sent letters Wednesday to New York City officials, requesting information on the city's sanctuary policies when it comes to illegal migrants.

The request comes after the committee claimed that the city's sanctuary laws have prevented the New York Police Department from complying with most Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers.

Under current New York City guidelines, the NYPD can only comply with the detainer if it is accompanied by a judicial warrant and is for a foreign national who is "convicted of a violent or serious crime" or has been "identified as a possible match in the terrorist screening database," according to the committee.

"Mayor Zohran Mamdani has bolstered New York's protections for criminal aliens at the expense of Americans," the committee said in a news release. "The Trump Administration lodged more than 6,000 detainers in New York City in just the first six months of 2025. The majority were not honored."

The House Judiciary Committee sent letters to the NYPD, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz and Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon.

The letters request the recipients respond by June 10, 2026.
