The House Natural Resource Committee on Wednesday advanced Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's legislation to codify the renaming of the former Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, to a floor vote.

The proposal comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this year that directed the Interior secretary to take all appropriate steps to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

"I am grateful to Chairman [Bruce] Westerman and the House Natural Resources Committee for favorably reporting my Gulf of America Act out of committee," Greene said in a statement. "The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the Gulf of America's maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries. It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as.

"Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously and that means acting fast to enact it," she continued. "That's exactly what this bill does by codifying one of President Trump's most important executive orders into law .... I urge my colleagues to join me to quickly pass this bill."

The legislation has been cosponsored by GOP Reps. Claudia Tenney of New York, Mike Collins of Georgia, Randy Weber of Texas, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, and Greg Steube of Florida, among others.
