House Republicans break impasse that allows voting to resume on chamber floor
House Speaker Mike Johnson won over Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Tennessee GOP Rep. Tim Burchett in the latest 211-215 vote.
The House passed a rule Tuesday that sets up floor debate and final votes on several measures, thereby ending a weeks-long impasse between House Republican leadership and a group of GOP hardliners that left the chamber frozen in place.
House Speaker Mike Johnson won over Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Tennessee GOP Rep. Tim Burchett in the latest 215-211 vote, marking a significant achievement for the Republican leader, who is attempting to merge the SAVE America Act with a fiscal 2027 appropriations bill funding the State Department and national security programs, according to The Hill.
GOP hardliners are also trying to force a vote on a bill codifying President Donald Trump’s border and immigration policies.
Luna said her vote to support the rule was contingent on Johnson latching parts of the SAVE America Act on all appropriations and must-pass bills and warned Senate Majority Leader John Thune against stripping the act out of its legislation.
"If SAVE America is stripped out of ANY of the legislation [Johnson] has agreed to send to the Senate, the blame will fall solely on [Thune]," Luna posted on X. "Hard to hide behind other senators when he is actively working against an issue that 80% of Americans support."
Burchett, who opposed the rule before the July 4 recess, said after Tuesday's vote that he felt GOP leaders attached the SAVE America Act “in a manner” he viewed as sufficient.
“We need to just keep pounding the Senate and forcing them to take the right stand,” Burchett said.
Florida GOP Rep. Randy Fine was the only Republican to oppose the rule.
