Republican House leadership on Monday urged party members in the chamber to stay united against demands levied by House Democrats as Congress faces a critical deadline to keep the government funded this week.

The 2025 fiscal year is set to end on Tuesday. The House passed a bill to keep the government funded through late November, but the Senate failed to pass the measure along party lines. The bill would need at least 60 votes to pass, meaning that at least seven Democrats or senators who caucus with the Democrats would have to support it. The White House has warned of mass layoffs if the shutdown takes effect.

Republican lawmakers told The Hill that the government is expected to be shut down starting Wednesday, unless President Donald Trump successfully intervenes. But Trump is not expected to agree to Democratic demands at a meeting later Monday.

House Speaker Mike Johnson orchestrated the call on Monday, which occurred while lawmakers were out of town on recess. There are no plans to bring lawmakers back to Washington, D.C. if the government does shut down, the outlet reported.

If there is a government shutdown, House and Senate Republican leaders plan to hold a joint press conference Wednesday.
