House to vote on MTG's bill to change the 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America'
President Donald Trump signed an executive order at the beginning of his term to change The Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The House is expected to hold a key vote as early as Monday on a measure by GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to change the name of the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America."
The vote will be held by the GOP-led House Rules Committee. If the measure passes, it will get a final vote on the House floor, where it is expected to pass.
President Donald Trump, at the start of his term in January, signed the executive order to change the name.
If Greene's measure passes in the House, it will go to the GOP-controlled Senate, where it is also expected to pass, then to Trump, whose signature on the measure would solidify his executive order into law.
"NEXT WEEK, my Gulf of America Act will make its way to the House Floor!" Greene, of Georgia, wrote Saturday on the social media platform X. "It’s time to codify President Trump’s executive order into law. It’s OUR gulf, let’s make the name permanent!"
The Gulf of Mexico is a body of water loosely bounded by the western shore of Florida, the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, the coastline in between both and the island of Cuba.
Google announced in January that it would be referring to the "Gulf of Mexico" as "Gulf of America" following the signing of the executive order.
