House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will meet with Texas Democrats on Wednesday amid a redistricting fight with Republicans.

Jeffries' office told POLITICO about the meeting on Tuesday, as President Trump has urged lawmakers to redraw Texas' congressional map to favor Republicans. The state usually redraws its congressional maps every 10 years in accordance with the census.

Earlier this month, Trump said that he hopes redistricting would give the GOP a few more House seats, helping them hold onto the slim majority in the November 2026 midterm elections.

“There could be some other states. We’re going to get another three, or four or five in addition. Texas would be the biggest one,” Trump said. “Just a simple redrawing we pick up five seats.”

There are 219 Republicans in the House and 212 Democrats, with four vacancies, one of which was last held by a Texas Democrat.

Democrats only hold 12 of the state's 38 congressional seats. They have been discussing how to fight the redistricting, including through a quorum break, which would mean that the required number of members refuse to attend the special session needed to pass the new congressional map. If Democrats flee the state, then they would incur $500 fine per day and the possibility of arrest.

Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green will meet Jeffries in Austin on Wednesday, and said that the party's leader could help “inspire” voters to get involved.

“We understand that this is all hands on deck for us in the Democratic Party,” Green told POLITICO. “This is not just about Texas. ... They will take this to other places.”

He also claimed that the redistricting "is racism" because the four districts targeted all elected people of color.

The Texas Republican Party said redistricting is “an essential step to preserving GOP control in Congress and advancing the President Trump’s America First agenda.”
