House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries slammed President Donald Trump's handling of the Israel-Hamas war and called for more humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza.

"During the first six months of Donald Trump’s time in office, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached a breaking point, hostages are still being held by Hamas despite the President’s promise they would be released and the pre-existing ceasefire the administration inherited has been breached," Jeffries wrote in a press release put out Friday.

He also called for the ceasefire deal under former President Joe Biden to be reinstated.

"It is imperative that humanitarian aid be surged into Gaza immediately, the remaining Israeli hostages be released and the ceasefire negotiated by the Biden administration restored," his statement continued. "We need a just and lasting peace."

The U.S. is currently trying to end the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Earlier this week, Trump’s special envoy for peace missions, Steve Witkoff, announced the United States would withdraw from Gaza ceasefire talks, citing frustrations with Hamas.

The U.S. is not the only country pushing for an end to the war in the Middle East, which has caused starvation in Gaza due to disruptions in sending food and other aid into the territory. More than 30 other countries issued a joint statement on Monday, calling for an immediate end to the war and the release of all remaining hostages.

"The starvation and death of Palestinian children and civilians in an ongoing war zone is unacceptable," Jeffries said. "The Trump administration has the ability to bring an end to this humanitarian crisis. They must act now."
