Nadler to request House Judiciary probe into DHS detainment of aide

Nadler said he wanted Jordan and the House to conduct an investigation into the incident because he wanted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to testify about the incident.

New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler on Monday said he was going to send a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, to ask for a Congressional investigation into the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) handcuffing of one of his aides last week.

The incident in question took place in New York on May 28, when some of Nadler's staff saw officers arresting migrants outside a courtroom in the same building as his Manhattan office. The staffers had invited some immigration rights advocates who were outside the courthouse up to the office, which prompted DHS officers to accuse the office of harboring rioters.

"They then came up to the office and demanded entrance," Nadler told CNN. "One of my staff members said, 'You can't come in here, you need a warrant.' They said, 'No, we don't need a warrant,' which is incorrect."

Nadler claimed one DHS officer pushed his aide, who pushed back, and was then handcuffed. She was later released and not charged with any crime.

A DHS spokesperson told Axios that one of the staffers had become verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office. She was arrested while they conducted a security check.

Nadler said he wanted Jordan and the House to conduct an investigation into the incident because he wanted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to testify about the incident.

“Now the fact is that this was totally unacceptable, the tactics were totally unacceptable, and they needed a warrant,” Nadler said. "My office is a congressional office. It’s a completely separate branch of government. A co-equal branch of government with the executive for which they work. And they had no right to come in."

Jordan has not commented on the possible investigation so far.
