Rep. Luna to launch discharge petition to stop insider trading in Congress
Luna said that President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent support ending insider trading in Congress.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., announced Thursday that she would be filing a special rule to allow her to call up a "discharge petition" in order to vote on banning insider trading.
"This mechanism, once signatures are collected, will bring the legislation to the floor that will STOP the very corrupt and blatant insider trading MANY members of Congress are engaging in… and yes it is happening on both sides by both @HouseGOP and @HouseDemocrats," Luna wrote on the social media platform, X.
A discharge petition allows an elected official to bypass leadership and get legislation to the floor by collecting signatures from a majority of members of Congress.
Luna said that President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent support ending insider trading in Congress.
"I realize this will make me very unpopular with some of my colleagues, but I don’t care," her post continued. "It’s the right thing to do. More importantly, it’s what the American people want."
Luna said she would fully go through with the discharge petition if Congress doesn't bring legislation to the floor soon to ban insider trading.
"I hope the powers at [sic] be do the right thing and bring legislation to the floor to stop insider trading," she said. "It has to happen immediately. The corruption is bad."
