Seven House Democrats side with Republicans in resolution condemning Los Angeles riots
House Republicans have repeatedly pushed back against the riots and Gov. Gavin Newsom's handling of the protests, but Democrats have largely slammed the Trump administration for involving the U.S. military.
House Republicans passed a resolution on Friday with bipartisan support after seven House Democrats in vulnerable districts voted to condemn riots that broke out in Los Angeles against recent federal law enforcement activity.
Violent protests broke out in the city earlier this month after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers conducted multiple raids in major cities as part of its crackdown on illegal immigration.
House Republicans have repeatedly pushed back against the riots and California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's handling of the protests, but Democrats have largely slammed the Trump administration for involving the U.S. military.
The seven Democrats who voted in favor of the resolution, which was introduced by nine California Republicans, include two from California, who represent districts in the Central Valley, according to The Hill.
The seven Democratic lawmakers are: California Reps. Adam Gray and Jim Costa, New York Reps. Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen, Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar, Maine Rep. Jared Golden, and North Carolina Rep. Don Davis.
“Messaging bills like this have no real force of law and simply express the sentiments of Congress — including the sentiment included in today’s resolution that Congress is grateful for the first responders and public safety officers who keep us safe day in and day out," Gray told the Sacramento Bee.
The resolution also slammed Newsom's and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass' handling of the riots.
