Thune promises swift confirmation process for Jay Clayton as next director of National Intelligence

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Tuesday that the upper chamber will move quickly to confirm Jay Clayton as the next Director of National Intelligence, following a meeting between the pair earlier in the day.
President Donald Trump nominated Clayton, who was serving as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York at the time, for the role last month. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte is currently serving as acting DNI in the interim.
"Great to sit down with Jay Clayton, [President Trump's] nominee to serve as his Director of National Intelligence," Thune said in a post on X. "Jay is eminently qualified, and the Senate will work to confirm him quickly."
The Senate Intelligence Committee is expected to hold Clayton's confirmation hearing on Wednesday. Republicans are hoping to confirm the nominee before they break for their annual August recess.
