President Donald Trump is expected to meet with congressional Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer this week, several news outlets reported Monday, as the government heads toward a possible shutdown at the end of the month.

Congress is out this week but faces a Sept. 30 deadline to keep the government funded. Jeffries, who leads the party in the House, and Schumer, who leads Democrats in the Senate, requested that the meeting take place before the deadline.

No official time or place has been announced so far, but the meeting is expected to take place in Washington, D.C. Trump signaled over the weekend that he was willing to meet the leaders in hopes of averting the shutdown, per NBC News.

"I’d love to meet with them, but I don’t think it’s going to have any impact," Trump said.

It is not clear if House Speaker Mike Johnson or Senate Majority Leader John Thune will be at the meeting.

The planned meeting comes after the two chambers failed to unite to pass a stopgap funding bill that would keep the government operational through Nov. 21. The House passed the measure, but the Senate failed to follow suit, with two Republicans siding with most Democrats. Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman supported the stopgap bill.
