Trump pauses Canada tariffs shortly before they were scheduled to take effect

President Donald Trump announced late Tuesday night that he has paused the 50% tariffs on Canada from taking effect at midnight and teased that a deal has been reached subject to final paperwork. 

The tariffs would have targeted about $20 billion worth of imports, which would be imposed even on products that qualify for preferential treatment under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, which has shielded much of Canadian industry from ​earlier tariffs.

Negotiators on both sides have discussed cutting the tariffs on Canadian vehicles from 25% to 15%, with further reductions based on the amount of U.S.-manufactured parts in each vehicle. 

"I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!" Trump posted to Truth Social. 

"The great Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave," he continued. "Thank you for your attention to this matter."

The tariffs will impact most Canadian goods and come after Trump accused the northern country of unfairly discriminating against American autos, alcohol and dairy products.
