This speech is not a filibuster and no legislation is being blocked, meaning Booker was able to give a prolonged speech that kept the Senate floor open.
New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker's Senate floor speech in opposition to Trump administration policies and actions that began Monday evening has stretched into late Tuesday afternoon, before other Democratic senators began praising him.
Booker said as he took the podium at 7 p.m. Monday that he would continue "for as long as I am physically able."
“In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety; financial stability; the core foundations of our democracy; and even our aspirations as a people from our highest offices for a sense of common decency,” Booker said during one segment of his hours-long speech. “These are not normal times in America. And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate.”
