Federal prosecutors on Thursday night officially filed their intent to pursue the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, who allegedly killed the late UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year, if he is convicted.

Attorney General Pam Bondi directed prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Mangione earlier this month, stating the alleged New York murder was a "premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America."

The Manhattan U.S. Attorney's office filed the intent in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, which comes a day before Mangione is expected to be arraigned on federal charges. He is currently facing both state and federal charges, but has already pleaded not guilty to the state charges.

The federal charges include murder through the use of a firearm, which makes him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

Federal prosecutors said they plan to pursue the death penalty because of the "impact of the victim's death upon his family, friends and co-workers."

They also alleged Mangione "expressed intent to target an entire industry and rally political and social opposition to that industry, by engaging in an act of lethal violence."
