Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., on Tuesday asked a judge to limit President Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles amid ongoing riots.

Trump has, thus far, deployed 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 marines to the city as rioters clash with law enforcement over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Federal antagonization, through the presence of soldiers in the streets, has already caused real and irreparable damage to the City of Los Angeles, the people who live there, and the State of California. They must be stopped, immediately,” he insisted, according to The Hill. He specifically asked that the Guard only be permitted to engage in law enforcement around federal buildings.

The president is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and has the authority to federalize state National Guard troops. It remains somewhat unclear what grounds Newsom may have to object.

Since the outbreak of the riots, the governor has goaded Washington, even asking border czar Tom Homan to arrest him and complaining when Trump suggested Homan follow through.
