John Bolton trashes Trump's Ukraine strategy days after FBI raid
Bolton claimed in an op-ed that Trump's strategy when it comes to Ukraine was marked by "confusion, haste and disarray," and that his attempt to quickly secure a peace deal made such an agreement even harder to reach.
Former National Security Advisor John Bolton on Monday slammed President Donald Trump's approach to Ukraine and foreign policy, which comes just days after his home was raided by the FBI.
The bureau raided Bolton's Maryland suburban home last week as part of a national security investigation that started under the Biden administration, but was not heavily pursued until FBI Director Kash Patel took office earlier this year.
It is not clear what the bureau was searching for, but Bolton served as Trump's national security advisor from 2018 to 2019, before he became a vocal critic of the president.
Bolton claimed in an op-ed for the Washington Examiner that Trump's strategy when it comes to Ukraine was marked by "confusion, haste and disarray," and that his attempt to quickly secure a peace deal made such an agreement even harder to reach.
"Trump’s Ukraine policy is no more coherent today than it was last Friday when his administration executed search warrants against my home and office," Bolton wrote. "Collapsing in confusion, haste, and the absence of any discernible meeting of the minds among Ukraine, Russia, several European countries, and America, Trump’s negotiations may be in their last throes, along with his Nobel Peace Prize campaign.
"Trump’s furious pace trying to move an extraordinarily complex conflict to resolution over the past two weeks was one of several significant mistakes," he continued. "It inevitably made reaching an agreement on a ceasefire, let alone a full-scale peace agreement, more difficult."
The former advisor claimed no trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine and the United States was likely to come any time soon, despite Trump floating the meeting during a discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
"Of course, it’s never over until it’s over, especially with Trump," Bolton concluded. "But his efforts over the last two-plus weeks may have left us further from peace and a just settlement for Ukraine than before."
