Pope Leo turns 70, thanks the Lord, his family, those who pray for him

When Leo was elected last May at age 69, he was the youngest pope since 1978, when Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope John Paul II at age 58.

Pope Leo XIV turned 70 on Sunday. 

His birthday was celebrated at the Vatican during his traditional noon blessing, according to ABC News.

Giant “Happy birthday” banners – in English, Italian and Spanish – as well as balloons and congratulatory signs were held up those gathered in St. Peter’s Square. 

“Dear friends, it seems you know today I have turned 70,” Leo said to cheers. “I thank the Lord, my parents and all those who remembered me in their prayers.”

When Leo was elected last May at age 69, he was the youngest pope since 1978, when Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope John Paul II at age 58, also according to the news outlet.
