The Trump administration has selected senior State Department official Michael Anton to lead technical discussions with Iran, unnamed sources have told multiple news outlets on Thursday.

The United States and Iran have agreed to discuss the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program, as the Iranian government looks to create nuclear weapons. President Donald Trump and U.S. allies have warned about the dangers a nuclear-capable Iran poses.

Anton, who served on Trump's National Security Council during the president's first term, was part of the discussions with Iran in Rome last weekend. He is expected to lead another round of talks with Iranian officials this weekend, before special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi meet in Rome again next week.

“He is the perfect man for the job given his experience and intellect. Most importantly, he will ensure that President Trump’s agenda on this file is followed through,” an administration official told Politico.

The development comes as the president considers whether to use military force to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, or pursue a more diplomatic approach. However, he has favored the diplomatic approach so far.
