Trump pushes back on Netanyahu's claim of no starvation in Gaza, says people need 'to get food'
"There is real starvation in Gaza — you can't fake that," President Trump said
President Trump on Monday pushed back on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's claim of there being no starvation in Gaza, saying that people living there need “to get food and safety right now.”
Earlier on Monday, Netanyahu said that there was no starvation in Gaza, The Guardian reported.
However, when Trump was asked during press conference in Scotland whether he agreed with Netanyahu, the president said: “I don’t know. Based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry. We’re giving a lot of money and a lot of food and other nations are now stepping up.”
"There is real starvation in Gaza – you can't fake that," he also said, according to Axios.
Trump was also asked whether he thought Israel had done everything it could to avoid civilian casualties.
"Nobody’s done anything great over there," he replied. "The whole place is a mess."
"Hamas doesn't want to give [up] the hostages. I told [Netanyahu] that he will have to now maybe do it in a different way," he said.
Trump also said that the U.S. had “given a lot of money to Gaza for food and everything else, a lot of that money is stolen by Hamas and a lot of that food is stolen.”
The president was also asked about the UK parliament last week calling for the immediate recognition of a Palestinian state.
“I’m not going to take a position, I don’t mind him [the prime minister] taking a position. I’m looking for getting people fed right now,” Trump said.
