You Vote: Should Pelosi go to Taiwan?

President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke on the phone on Thursday as tensions between the U.S. and China continue to rise.

Overshadowing the call was the prospect of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) traveling to Taiwan early next month. If Pelosi goes through with the planned trip, she would become the highest-ranking U.S. lawmaker to visit the island nation in 25 years.

China views Taiwan, a self-governing democracy, as a rogue province that must be united with the Chinese mainland — by force if necessary. Chinese officials vehemently oppose Taiwanese independence and anything resembling diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Taiwan. As a result, they've been threatening severe consequences if Pelosi's trip happens.

Experts and lawmakers from both parties have openly supported Pelosi going to Taiwan, arguing giving in to Chinese threats would show weakness and embolden Beijing.

However, the White House and the Pentagon have been working behind the scenes to warn Pelosi of the potential risks of going. Biden has said the military opposes the trip, and according to reports, so does White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
