Chinese government hackers breach U.S. Treasury sanctions office: Report

The Office of Foreign Assets Control and the Office of Financial Research and the office of U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen were identified as targets of the hack in the report.

Chinese government hackers breached the U.S. Treasury office that handles economic sanctions, according to a report from the Washington Post citing U.S. officials on Wednesday.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control and the Office of Financial Research and the office of U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen were identified as targets of the hack in the report.

The Treasury Department revealed that the hackers breached the cybersecurity service provider BeyondTrust and stole unclassified documents. 

The department classified the hack as a “major incident.”
