Former Waste Management CEO David Steiner is set to lead the U.S. Postal Service as postmaster general, the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors announced Friday.

Steiner will replace former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who resigned in March. He is also on the FedEx board of directors with the title of lead independent director, which he will leave to join USPS, according to the announcement.

“Dave is the right person to lead the Postal Service at this time to ensure this magnificent and historic organization thrives into the future,” Postal Service Board of Governors Chairwoman Amber McReynolds said in a statement on Friday.

Prior to the passage of the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970, USPS had operated under the White House for decades. Currently, a board of governors appointed by the president chooses the postmaster general and provides oversight. The board has one President Trump appointee and four appointed by former President Biden, with four seats vacant.

"It is an incredible honor to be asked to lead the world’s greatest postal organization, with a history that stretches back before the founding of the United States," Steiner said in a statement. "I deeply admire the public service and business mission of this amazing institution, and I believe strongly in maintaining its role as an independent establishment of the executive branch."

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, reported Tuesday that Trump was involved in Steiner being picked.
