The Justice Department has opened an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations lodged against former California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, multiple news outlets reported Thursday.

Swalwell resigned his congressional post Tuesday and suspended his campaign for California governor earlier this week after multiple women accused the Democrat of sexual misconduct. He has denied the allegations but is also being investigated in Los Angeles.

Five women have accused the former lawmaker of sexual misconduct in California and New York, according to NOTUS. One claimed Swalwell drugged, choked and raped her in a California hotel in 2018.

U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro has also created a tip line for information on Swalwell, urging those with information to call 202-252-0809 with any tips.

"I would expect there would be victims who might have information," she said in a video on X. "What I think is really important right now is for anyone who has any relevant information or has any complaint as it relates to the kinds of complaints we're hearing about with Eric Swalwell needs to come forward to my office."

The special election to replace Swalwell in the House through the end of the year will be held Aug. 18.
