Gretchen Whitmer endorses Haley Stevens in Michigan Senate Democratic primary

Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens on Friday as the party's nominee for the United States Senate. 

The endorsement means Whitmer is supporting the state's more moderate Democratic candidate over the more progressive candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, who is the former director of the Department of Health, Human and Veterans Service of Wayne County, Mich. 

“As governor, I have one strategy: Get things done. And that strategy informs everything that I do, and that’s why I’m endorsing Haley Stevens for the U.S. Senate,” Whitmer said in a video posted to Stevens’ account.

The nominee will replace outgoing Michigan Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. The winner will face GOP candidate and former Rep. Mike Rogers, who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump, in November. Rogers is running unopposed.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have [Whitmer's] endorsement for U.S. Senate,” Stevens said. “She is a champion for our state, she understands the stakes of this race and why it’s so important we elect the strongest Dem in this primary, and she gets stuff done for Michigan. Let’s go win!”

The Michigan primaries will take place on Aug. 4. Early voting in the state is already underway.
