A midair collision between two helicopters in southern New Jersey on Sunday resulted in one confirmed fatality and at least one person critically injured, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. Sunday near Hammonton, a town in Atlantic County, when the aircraft collided and crashed to the ground, according to Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel.

Video captured by bystanders and circulating on social media showed one helicopter spinning uncontrollably before descending rapidly toward the ground.

Rescue crews from local police and fire departments responded to the scene and extinguished flames from at least one of the helicopters.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said. Authorities have not yet released details about the identities of the victims or how many people were onboard the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will lead the investigation into the cause of the collision.
