The Trump administration this week released its  "merit hiring plan," which will now require federal applicants to write a short essay on how they plan to support the president's agenda, and aims to hire "patriotic Americans."

The initiative comes after President Donald Trump directed his team to come up with an alternative hiring process on his first day in office.

Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy Vince Haley and acting director of the Office of Personnel Management Charles Ezell wrote the plan.

The writers blasted previous administrations, saying they used an "overly complex federal hiring system [and] overemphasized discriminatory 'equity' quotas and too often resulted in the hiring of unfit, unskilled bureaucrats."

The memo listed four key elements in its new hiring process, including: Streamlining the process, reducing the hiring times to under 80 days, implementing a skills-based hiring process, and "reforming the federal recruitment process to ensure that only the most talented, capable and patriotic Americans are hired to the federal service."

The plan includes a requirement for all applicants for jobs above a GS-5 pay grade to write short essays on their work ethic, how they are committed to the Constitution, how they plan to improve government efficiency, and how they plan to advance Trump’s agenda.

The hiring effort will also focus on recruiting early career, STEM and veteran candidates.
