Trump to name new Federal Reserve governor, Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner in coming days
Possible candidates for the Fed governor position include National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, current Fed Governor Christopher Waller and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent
President Trump says he will name a new Federal Reserve governor and Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner in the coming days.
Trump told reporters Sunday that he has a “couple of people in mind” for the Fed role, after Adriana Kugler announced Friday that she would resign her board of governors seat, a role which was to expire in January, Bloomberg reported.
Possible candidates for the Fed position include National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, current Fed Governor Christopher Waller, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trump’s nominee for the position could move into the chairman role when Jerome Powell’s term expires in May.
Trump fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Friday, hours after a weak jobs report partly based on steep downward revisions for May and June. The president claimed that she had overstated jobs growth under the last president to aid the rival Harris presidential campaign and that she had wrongly revised his own jobs numbers downwards.
Hassett said on Sunday that the adjustment to employment data on Friday is justification for the firing of the BLS commissioner.
“I mean, the revisions are hard evidence,” he said on NBC News.
Hassett also said that there have been a "bunch of patterns that could make people wonder."
