A gunman in New York City opened fire inside a skyscraper on Park Avenue on Monday, killing four people including a New York police officer, before allegedly killing himself. One other person was shot and is in critical but stable condition.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Monday night confirmed that the suspected "lone gunman" responsible for the shooting has been "neutralized."

Tisch later identified the suspect as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, who had a Las Vegas address. No motive was immediately clear, but he had a history of mental illness.

“His motives are still under investigation and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,” Tisch said in a news conference. “345 Park Avenue is a commercial office building whose tenants include the NFL, Rudin Management, KPMG and Blackstone.”

Tamura allegedly carried an M4 rifle into the building, where he opened fire on people in the lobby before going up to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management’s office is located. He shot one other person on the 33rd floor before shooting himself.

A senior law enforcement official told Just The News that one of the people who died was an off-duty NYPD officer who was moonlighting as a security officer at the skyscraper. The officer was shot in the back.

The officer has been identified as Didarul Islam, but the names of the other victims have not been released so far. However, Tisch said the other victims were another man and two women.

Four other victims are being treated for “minor injuries sustained in their attempts to flee the scene,” Tisch said.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, both Democrats, have confirmed that they've been briefed on the situation.
