The state of Kentucky was hit with devastating floods over the weekend which have left at least nine dead and thousands of people without power.

Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear said that this is one of the most serious weather events that the state has dealt with in at least ten years.

The counties where some of the fatalities occurred were in Hart, Pike and Clay, according to NBC News. The death toll is expected to rise.

"Kentucky is still experiencing widespread impacts from the severe weather," Beshear wrote on the social media platform, X on Monday. "We need everyone to be aware that conditions are dangerous, and folks need to stay off the roads in areas with high water."

Among those that died include a mother and her 7-year-old child when their car was swept away by the floodwaters in Hart County.

According to a Sunday press conference, about 40,000 residents do not have power.

Beshear said that President Donald Trump approved disaster relief funding for the state on Sunday.
