Winsome Sears pushes for recall of Virginia prosecutor over kidnapping case
Sears, who is running to replace the term-limited Youngkin later this year, blasted the attorney for not protecting his community by releasing violent criminals back into the region and failing to work with federal law enforcement.
Virginia's Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears on Wednesday urged voters to recall Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano as he faces scrutiny for releasing a man who went on to allegedly attempt a kidnapping days later.
Virginia GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin has reportedly opened an investigation into Descano over the incident at Fair Oaks Mall, which is just one of many examples of Descano allegedly releasing high-profile criminals back into the community.
Sears, who is running to replace the term-limited Youngkin later this year, blasted the attorney for not protecting his community by releasing violent criminals back into the region and failing to work with federal law enforcement.
"Why is this man still in office? It is time for somebody to do a recall based on a dereliction of duty, and it can be done," Sears told Fox News. "If I were to keep telling you how many cases that this man, Steve Descano, has allowed to let go, doesn't honor ICE detainers, puts murderers back in the community, et cetera, et cetera, it's like, what are we doing?
"He is the one who is not protecting the citizens of Fairfax County. And the problem is, these criminals – they don't just stay in Fairfax," she continued. "They come all the way through Virginia and do their mayhem when he, one man, had the opportunity to do the right thing and keep Virginians safe."
Sears also put pressure on her opponent in the gubernatorial election, Democrat Abigail Spanberger, by urging her to take a stance either for or against the attorney. Descano, a Democrat, reportedly donated to Spanberger's campaign in March.
"Abigail, it is time for you to come forward and make a decision," Sears insisted. "Do you support Steve Descano or do you support a recall?"
Descano also faced calls to resign his post last year after illegal migrant and rape suspect Navarette Romero was released back into the community.
Descano and Spanberger have not publicly commented on Sears' calls so far.
