Air Force Global Strike Command pulls use of the M18 modular handgun system amid safety probe

The United States' Air Force's Global Strike Command has ordered its troops to pause the use of the M18 modular handgun system amid a safety investigation following the death of a service member over the weekend.

The unnamed airman died while on duty at the F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming on Sunday, an Air Force official told Soldier of Fortune Magazine. The cause of death was not immediately clear, but he was assigned to the 90th Security Forces Squadron, 90th Missile Wing.

“Effective immediately, all personnel in AFGSC will pause use of the MI8 MHS for all operational and training activities until further notice,” Gen. Thomas A. Bussiere wrote in a Monday memo. “This pause will remain in place until completion of ongoing AFOSI and Safety investigations into a recent incident at F.E. Warren AFB.”

The M18 pistol is a variant of the Sig Sauer M17 pistol and is standard issue for many security personnel in the Air Force. It is also used by Army units. The Air Force troops impacted by the memo will be using the M4 rifle during the investigation.
