The Stafford Township Police Department said Monday that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was struck by a suspect in a moving vehicle when attempting to arrest the illegal migrant.
The incident reportedly took place Monday morning in Manahawkin, New Jersey. The agent was allegedly attempting to arrest the suspect when the person fled the scene in a vehicle which was used to strike the agent. The agent sustained unknown injuries.
“The agent discharged his firearm at the vehicle, reportedly striking it,” the police department added. “The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle and has not been located at this time.”
The condition of the ICE agent has not yet been released, and it was not immediately clear if the suspect was injured.
The police department noted that it abided by the New Jersey law that forbids law enforcement officers at the local, county and state levels from participating in federal immigration raids, stating that it was not part of the ICE operation but that it helped secure the crime scene and keep traffic from the area.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
