Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents in Maine last month set a nearly 24-year state record for the highest number of arrests in a single month, CBP said in a news release Wednesday.

Border Patrol agents arrested a total of 113 illegal migrants in Maine in April, who came from 16 different countries.

The agency said the number of arrests was not because of a surge in illegal immigration in the state, but because it increased its enforcement throughout the state. Most of the arrests were illegal migrants who crossed into the U.S. through the southern border.

"Here in Maine, Border Patrol Agents are working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep our border secure," Acting Chief Patrol Agent Craig Shepley said in a statement. "If you attempt to cross the border illegally, you will be apprehended.

"If you are present in the United States without a legal status, you will be detained and removed in accordance with all applicable immigration laws," he added.

Shepley said that illegal entries into the U.S. through Maine's border with Canada have decreased under the new administration, which is partly because of a back-to-basics approach in balancing personnel, technology, and infrastructure to secure the northern border.

The agency also said Maine's Houlton Sector had to receive help from Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials with transporting 29 migrants from Portland, Maine, to other parts of the country for further processing.
