Trump calls to cut off trade with Spain: 'Wasted cause'
Trump has repeatedly criticized Spain over its refusal to raise its defense spending, a longstanding goal he has pushed for every member of the bloc.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for cutting off trade with Spain, citing its refusal to cooperate with the U.S. as a NATO partner.
"Spain is a wasted cause. We don't want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way. I'd like to cut it off," he said during the NATO summit in Ankara. "Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. Cut off all trade with Spain, please. Including visits. We don't want anything to do. They're hopeless. Bad people."
Trump has repeatedly criticized Spain over its refusal to raise its defense spending, a longstanding goal he has pushed for every member of the bloc.
He has also faced opposition from Madrid over the Iran war and the government has not allowed the U.S. to use its bases for the conflict.
