Trump doubles down on renaming Strait of Hormuz to 'Trump Strait'

President Donald Trump on Wednesday repeated his suggestion of renaming the Strait of Hormuz to the "Trump Strait" amid the ongoing Iran war.

"We control the Hormuz strait. I think we should call the Hormuz strait [...] The Trump Straight. Yes," he said in during his speech at the Republican midterm convention. "It's going to be called, ladies and gentlemen. I'll have an announcement. We'll call it the Trump Strait, and I'm sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that."

"I'd like to tell you it was their idea. It was not their idea. Don't think they're too happy about," he went on. 

Trump previously floated the renaming earlier this month. The suggestion follows Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" and Lake Ontario to "Lake America" via executive order. 

The Strait of Hormuz takes its name from Ahura Mazda, the chief deity of Zoroastrianism, which was once dominant in the region before the Islamic conquests of the 7th Century.
