UK reviews deal on Chagos Islands as Trump denounces 'terrible' plan

The United Kingdom is reviewing a planned handover of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius amid scrutiny from President Donald Trump, who has expressed concern over the fate of a U.S. military base there.

The Chagos Archipelago lies in the Indian Ocean and are British territories. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed this week that the government would work with the Trump administration to resolve the dispute, Politico reported.

Diego Garcia base lies on the islands and has been a critical supply depot and jumping off point amid the Iran war.

The deal has also attracted scrutiny from right-wing politicians in the UK.
