US Marshal and illegal migrant injured during ICE stop in Los Angeles
The suspect was shot in the elbow and the U.S. Marshal was injured in the hand by a ricochet bullet, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. Both are in the hospital.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday said federal officers wounded an illegal migrant and a United States Marshal during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stop in Los Angeles.
The law enforcement officers were trying to arrest the migrant, who allegedly previously escaped from custody, after he was pulled over in a "standard law enforcement procedure." The migrant allegedly tried to ram the officers with his car while trying to flee the scene, prompting the officers to fire "defensive shots," the department said.
The suspect was shot in the elbow and the U.S. Marshal was injured in the hand by a ricochet bullet, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. Both are in the hospital.
"These are the consequences of conduct and rhetoric by sanctuary politicians and activists who urge illegal aliens to resist arrest," she said. "Resisting arrest puts the safety of illegal aliens, law enforcement, and the public at risk."
The incident comes amid a period of heightened tension regarding federal law enforcement officers. Protests have broken out surrounding the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration in Chicago, Portland and Los Angeles.
