The remainder of American forces are set to leave Syria completely, American officials told the Wall Street Journal.

The reported exit from the Levantine nation comes as Sunni majoritarian government of Ahmed al-Sharaa appears poised to consolidate control of the entire country and end the longstanding civil war.

Roughly 1,000 U.S. troops remain in the country as of press time, primarily in the Kurdish majority northwest. American forces already withdrew from the Al-Tanf base near the Jordanian border.

Al-Sharaa overthrew the Assad government in early 2025 through a lightning offensive that saw much of the Syrian Arab Army simply evaporate. He subsequently launched an offensive on the Kurds in the northwestern portion of the country.

The success of that blitz nearly obliterated the Syrian Democratic Forces and prompted them to agree to an integration process. The U.S. had militarily supported the SDF for much of the war.
