Democratic state legislators in California on Thursday advanced their plans to redraw the state's congressional map and place it in front of voters in the state this November.

The move is in response to Texas' redistricting effort, which passed the state House on Wednesday night. The Texas map is intended to potentially give Republicans five more seats in Congress in the 2026 midterms.

The legislative package to put the California map before voters has passed both Democratic-led chambers with the two-thirds vote needed to enact "urgent" measures in the state, NBC News reported

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has led his state's response to the Texas map, is expected to sign the package shortly.
